Closing Remarks with Jerry Bell: Reinventing Identity After Success

June 3, 2026

What happens when the thing that defines your identity disappears overnight? In this episode of Closing Remarks, host Dara Shareef sits down with Jerry Bell, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end and CEO of Bell & Associates Business Consultants, to discuss discipline, reinvention, resilience, and preparation for life after the point when everything changes.

Jerry Bell was drafted by the Buccaneers in 1982 and established himself as one of the most loyal tight ends in franchise history until an unfortunate event ended his NFL career. However, this was far from the end of the road for him; this incident exclusively served as a prologue to the rest of his life.

Preparing for the Next Chapter

What makes Jerry’s story different is that he was already preparing for life after football long before he needed to. Raised in a disciplined household where academics mattered as much as athletics, Jerry earned a degree in computer information systems from Arizona State while balancing football at the highest level.

Having been influenced by his parents' discipline and high expectations, he earned a bachelor’s degree in computer information systems from Arizona State University, earned his MBA while playing for the Buccaneers, and began working at IBM to be better prepared for life after the sport.

Instead of allowing football to define him, he built confidence outside the game. Those same lessons later helped him transition into business.

“Most people spend years building an identity around one thing,” said Dara Shareef. “Very few are prepared for what happens when it suddenly changes.”

For many business owners, this may feel familiar.

The sale closes. Leadership changes. Retirement may be approaching. A role that formerly defined your schedule, purpose, and identity is suddenly gone. Jerry’s story explores what it means to move forward after moments just like this and why preparation matters.

Building a Legacy Beyond Work

Beyond football and business, Jerry spent years on community leadership, philanthropy, and mentorship. He and his wife, Ruth, have funded scholarships at Arizona State and the University of Florida, as well as many community initiatives across the region.

For Jerry, success is measured by impact, relationships, family, and helping others create opportunities for themselves. This episode focuses on identity, resilience, and learning to build purpose beyond a single chapter of life.

Closing Remarks is now streaming on Spotify,  Amazon Music,  Apple Podcasts, and YouTube. You won’t want to miss Jerry's closing remarks.
