Industrial Services Leads Buyer Demand

September 29, 2026

What are buyers looking for? To find out, Benchmark International analyzed 3,371 active buyer searches updated over the 12 months ending September 2026.

Industrial services appeared more often than any other industry, included in 41% of searches that specified an industrial preference.

For business owners in the sector, that number is worth noting. It shows where buyer interest is concentrated and raises an even more interesting question: What makes one business stand out from another?

Key Highlights

  • Industrial Services is the most searched industry. 41% of acquisition searches that named an industry mentioned Industrial Services, which is the largest share among all industries studied.
  • Buyer interest reaches across many industrial sectors. Precision Manufacturing & Engineering and Industrial Products & Distribution were also among the requested industries.
  • Buyers look beyond just the industry. Earnings visibility, defensibility, supply chain positioning, service‑oriented revenue, and non‑cyclical demand can all affect buyer interest.
  • Buyer Match Criteria offer a closer look. Benchmark International’s buyer data shows what active acquirers are searching for by industry, company size, geography, and transaction structure.

Benchmark Your Business Against Current Acquisition Demand

Industrial services stand out. Interest also spreads across the broader industrial sector. Precision manufacturing and engineering and industrial products and distribution follow, showing that buyers look across a range of industrial businesses.

Why Are Buyers Interested in Industrial Services

Industrial services can deliver the expertise and resources other companies need to operate.

Sourcing replacement maintenance, engineering, inspection, repair, and technical services becomes harder when clients have built relationships over time, earned special certifications, or developed capabilities that took years to build.

Infrastructure, grid modernization, water system, and data center investments are driving new demand for businesses providing construction, maintenance, and supporting activities.

Industrial service businesses also attract private equity investment. Many are established, owner-operated businesses where private equity firms can help grow platforms through additional services, customers, capabilities, or geographic diversification.

For the business owner, this means an acquirer may not be a competitor but a company seeking capabilities, relationships, or market position built over many years.

What Makes a Business Stand Out?

Being in an industry can get a company noticed, but buyers notice the real difference when they look closer. From the list of buyer criteria, a few traits stand out:

  • Earnings Visibility: Maintenance, checking, and service contracts give buyers a clearer view of future earnings than one‑off projects or installations of the same size.
  • Defensibility: Special certificates, unique designs, and strong ties with original equipment makers give a firm a position rivals find hard to copy.
  • Supply Chain Positioning: If a firm sits strong in the supply chain, customers find it hard to replace it because they rely on its parts, help, or skills.
  • Service‑Oriented Revenue Models: A customer base that keeps coming back for after‑sale work creates revenue beyond the first job or sale.
  • Non‑Cyclical Demand: Firms that serve must‑have, legal, or regulated needs stay steadier when the economy shifts.

No single factor defines a business. How these strengths come together can capture a buyer’s attention.

M&A Market Conditions

Buyers are interested in services, and plenty of money is still available to buy.

Private investors made up 47.6% of all deals, the biggest share since records began in 2018.

PwC expects manufacturing deal numbers to grow 5% in 2026 and service deal value to rise 9%. PitchBook says about $1 trillion in private investor money is waiting to be used as of mid‑2025.

These numbers show a market with a lot of money. The fight for well‑placed businesses remains strong. For owners, this means they must show the qualities buyers look for when evaluating a company.

Could Buyers be Looking for a Business Like Yours?

Industrial services have clearly caught buyers' attention. The key issue for owners of industrial services companies, manufacturers, and distributors is how they compare to this demand.

Benchmark International keeps the Buyer Match Criteria behind this analysis, including what active acquirers look for in the specific industry, company size, geographic location, and transaction terms.

The demand is there. Where does your business stand?
